A Change In Perspective As A School Psychologist

Throughout a career in school psychology, collaboration with parent attorneys and advocates highlighted their essential role in guiding families through the complexities of the special education process. However, a deeper question arose: who supports those who support the students?
Upon connecting with parents, advocates, and parent attorneys striving to challenge the status quo in Texas special education, a pivotal moment emerged. Faced with a crossroads, the choice became clear: continue only representing public school districts, which may not always prioritize the best interests of the students they serve, or shift focus to support all those advocating for students to receive the help they need to succeed.
This decision—choosing between these two paths—is one that many in similar roles find profoundly challenging. Ultimately, rather than choosing one side, a nuanced approach developed—collaborating with both parties, with some successes and some challenges. Ultimately, this balanced path aims to ensure that every student’s needs are met, regardless of which side of the process they come from.

College Choices Leading To Current Paths

The academic journey began with the opportunity to attend a women’s college in Missouri known for its small class sizes and focused curriculum. It was during this time that an important realization emerged: although the PK-12 education received in Oregon was solid, it had not fully fostered the development of critical, self-directed learning skills.
Undergraduate studies continued at a women’s college in California, where a double major in history and psychology was pursued. While initially considering various paths, a discovery was made in school psychology—a discipline that integrates interests in education, psychology, and legal frameworks, as well as providing practical tools to support students, families, and educators.
